Appropriate assessment

Appropriate Assessment is required where a plan or project may result in likely significant effects on one or more European sites, including Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) and Special Protection Areas (SPAs).

We provide Appropriate Assessment services in accordance with Article 6 of the Habitats Directive and Irish planning requirements, supporting projects from Screening through to Natura Impact Statement (NIS) preparation and consultation with competent authorities. Our assessments are evidence-led, proportionate, and tailored to the scale and sensitivity of each project, ensuring potential effects on European sites are robustly assessed and clearly documented within the planning process.

Ecological constraints / feasibility

Where required, Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA) provide a structured and policy aligned evaluation of likely significant effects, mitigation measures, and residual impacts to inform planning decisions.

We undertake EcIA in accordance with current guidance and planning policy requirements, integrating survey findings, habitat evaluation, species assessments, and mitigation design into clear and proportionate reporting. We work closely with project teams to identify ecological risks early and develop practical mitigation strategies that support project delivery while maintaining compliance.

For projects requiring Environmental Impact Assessment, we prepare Biodiversity Chapters that consolidate ecological findings into coherent and defensible reporting aligned with the wider environmental assessment process.

We also prepare practical Method Statements, Toolbox Talks, and Construction Ecological Management Plans (CEMP) to ensure ecological requirements are clearly communicated and effectively implemented on site.

Where required, Biodiversity Management Plans (BMP) establish long-term habitat management, enhancement, and monitoring measures to support biodiversity commitments beyond construction.
